Το βράδυ της Τετάρτης 19 Μαίου 2010, μίλησε για την Ποντιακή γενοκτονία αλλά και το Κυπριακό ,η συγγραφέας και δημοσιογράφος Φανούλα Αργυρού, στο Σταθάκειο κέντρο στην Αστόρια της Νέας Υόρκης. Η κ. Αργυρού, που προσκλήθηκε από την Παμποντιακή Ομοσπονδία Αμερικής και Καναδά και ήλθε από το Λονδίνο, όπου είναι εγκατεστημένη, μίλησε με θέμα «Από τη Γενοκτονία των Ελλήνων του Πόντου στην Κατοχή της Κύπρου».

Η κα Φ. Αργυρού έχει ειδικότητα στην μελέτη των βρετανικών επίσημων αποδεσμευθέντων εγγράφων του Βρετ. Υπ. Εξωτερικών σε σχέση με την Κύπρο με πείρα πάνω από 20 χρόνια στο θέμα αυτό. ΄Εχει γράψει 8 βιβλια, αρκετές μελέτες, ομιλίες σε συνέδρια, εκατοντάδες άρθρα στον Ελληνο-κυπριακό Τύπο στην Κύπρο και συνεργάζεται με τις ομογενειακές εφημερίδες του Λονδίνου «Τα Νέα» και «Ελευθερία», και την «Σημερινή» της Κύπρου καθώς και με άλλες ως επίσης και το Ράδιο Πρώτο στην Κύπρο.

This one of the many Holocausts our Hellenic people suffered under the genocidal Turks. In Arkadi , Crete on November 8, 1866 less than 300 Hellenic warriors and some 700 women and children sought refuge in the Arkadi monastery and were besieged by 20,000 Turkish soldiers armed with cannons and heavy arms. The Turks broke through and the beseiged Hellenes rather than surrender to Turkish rape and slaughter, set spark to a gunpowder store.

REPORT FROM THE CANA 4 WHO FACED TURKISH BARBARISM IN WASHINGTON DC

Community activists are drawn to work for a cause for a host of reasons. On Sunday, July 19, 2009, at 7 pm a core group of CANA activists gathered outside the Turkish ambassadors residence in Sheridan Park, Washington DC. We all traveled long journeys to this destination. Ioannis remembered the suffering of an eighteen year old cousin who endured an agonizing death as a result of Turkeys napalm bombing of Massoura village in 1974. Georgia was there for a grandmother, Gregoria Georgiou, killed execution style by the invading Turkish military on August 31, 1974 in Aheritou, Cyprus. Theo looked to the vigil and demonstration to gain insight as to whether his faith could truly allow him to forgive but never forget Turkish aggression and lead him closer to a decision on whether to join the priesthood of the Greek Orthodox Church. Foti came because he is drawn to the Hellenic culture and the bloody history of Turkish barbarism to the Armenian, Assyrian, Greek and Chinese communities. This group was aided intermittently by local DC activists but they largely stood alone against the Turkish embassy and diplomatic community for the entire vigil and demonstration.

The CANA activists set up a candle lit memorial to the victims of the illegal Turkish invasion and occupation of Cyprus. Candles were lit to memorialize the missing and the murdered Cypriots, for time lost to the political ineptitude and personal agendas of the Greek and Cypriot establishment and lobby groups, for unfulfilled dreams and stolen land torn from the grasp of Greek Cypriots by the British and American geopolitical elite.

CANA activists used a banner, placards, the Cypriot, Greek and Byzantine flags to greet DC commuters driving past the Turkish ambassadors residence on Monday morning.. They wanted it known that July 20, 2009, marked the 35th anniversary of the illegal Turkish invasion and occupation of Cyprus.. The only acceptable goal was for Turkey to Get Out of Cyprus.

At that time, all interested people are asked to come to Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House at 1:00 PM to join hands in a human chain of at least HUNDREDS of people walking in a circle past the White House carrying Serbian and American flags and posters while blowing whistles and beating drums. There will also be speakers and presentations at that demonstration.

This is the first notice about what will be a series of responses to the illegal declaration by the Kosovo Albanians. These first events are jointly organized by:

Avram Israel, a Jew, is worshiped in this capital city. That may seem surprising in a country where an extreme right-wing, xenophobic party leads in voter support and neo-Nazi activity is rising. Yet when the smartly dressed Israel enters an overcrowded cafe across from the National Theater, he automatically is seated in the cordoned-off VIP section while diners smile at him and nod deferentially.

Serbians know Israel is Jewish because of his name, and they likely remember how eight years ago and for some time afterward Israel was the most popular man in Belgrade, according to polls. That's because for three months in the spring of 1999, the logistics expert was on television every night telling Serbs how to steer clear of the NATO bombs falling on Belgrade. The bombardment was meant to stop the late dictator Slobodan Milosevic from ridding the southernmost Serbian province of Kosovo of ethnic Albanians.

Now, on the eve of a Dec. 10 deadline to reach a deal on Kosovo's future, Israel is worried that Kosovo's plans to declare independence from Serbia in the coming months could bring further trials to this increasingly isolated southeastern European country and its 3,000 Jews. Serbia staunchly opposes Kosovo independence. Russia supports the Serb position, but most of Europe and the West are lining up behind the Kosovo Albanians' bid for an independent state. "Everything that is going on with Kosovo, like the US support of the Albanians, is contributing to the rise of ultranationalism in Serbia," Israel bemoaned. Serbia is in the throes of an intense wave of nationalism - a development that often precipitates anti-Semitism in Europe - fueled by the widespread belief that the "anti-Serb" West supports the Kosovo Albanians' plans. Still, even as extremists gain ground in Serbia, Jewish life in the country is flourishing thanks in large part to foreign donors. In the past three years, the main community building, which is attached to the synagogue, had its dilapidated main hall renovated into a bright social center with a grant from Italy's Jewish community.

A kosher kitchen opened with a donation from New Yorker Stephen Rosenberg, and a heating system was installed thanks to a loan from the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee. "Ten years ago we had no Shabbat dinner and almost no one came to synagogue," said Yitzhak Asiel, the 42-year-old chief rabbi of Serbia. "Now we get 100 people for Shabbat dinner in the new hall." During the 1990s, Jews fled the states of the former Yugoslavia as Serbia waged a war to hold on to the breakaway provinces that later become the nations of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Slovenia. After Milosevic was ousted in 2000 following NATO's bombing of the country a year earlier, Jews began trickling back to Belgrade. The 10.3 million citizens of Serbia are predominantly Orthodox Christian, with a Muslim minority of 239,000. "It's a miracle the community exists at all," Israel told JTA.

Along with being poorer than many of their Jewish neighbors, Serbian Jews have not had the communal property restitution or compensation agreements negotiated in most other post-communist countries to rejuvenate Jewish life after decades of neglect. But Belgrade Jews now have a secret weapon: Stefan Sablic, 31, a hip, ambitious Serb theater director whose funky performances of Pakistani, Israeli, Iranian, Balkan, Gypsy and Sephardic music - Serb Jews are mostly Sephardic - have drawn young people back to the community. Some 800 Jews live in Belgrade, with 300 between the ages of 16 and 27. The new communal facilities and foreign-funded programs have helped spur Serbia's younger Jews to become active members of the Jewish community, says Aleksandar Belevski, 21. Three years ago, JDC opened the Center for Youth Education in the Jewish community building and equipped it with computers.

Sablic's post-graduate cantorial studies in Israel also were supported by the JDC. "Many young people who were away during the Milosevic years are coming back from Israel and now they have someplace to meet," Belevski said. "We are maybe 20 to 30 people every Wednesday hanging out together." "We go for quality over quantity. I am very optimistic about our continuity." Asiel said the Jewish community is much more in the public eye than even two years ago. For instance, the conservative government of Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica and the Orthodox Church launched a daily TV program last year in which Asiel explains some aspect of Judaism. As for the influence of the far-right Serbian Radical Party, which received one-third of the vote in January parliamentary elections, Asiel is dismissive. "No other party is willing to form a government with them," he said. Alexandr Lebl, the head of a Jewish community group that monitors anti-Semitism in Serbia, said extremists target "Albanians, Bosnian Muslims and Hungarians, not really Jews." Jewish-Serb relations have been helped over the decades by a shared status as victims of the Nazis and Croatian fascists during World War II, when nearly the entire Jewish population of then-Yugoslavia was killed.

More recently, during the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s, local and foreign Jewish groups earned respect as neutral political brokers and as providers of food and medicine. However, many Serbs "think the NATO bombing of Belgrade was a conspiracy led by Jews like the U.S. secretary of state, Madeleine Albright," Lebl said. Fears of a growing neo-Nazi presence in Serbia surfaced last month after two neo-Nazi groups tried, albeit unsuccessfully, to march in Novi Sad on the birthday of Nazi leader Heinrich Himmler. Aleksander Necak, the president of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Serbia, said that even though "people will tell you there is no anti-Semitism in Serbia, it's not true." Necak described how vandals spray-painted a swastika on the door of a building outside Belgrade in September just as he was about to open an exhibition there on Jewish property. "We have 20 cases in the courts concerning slander against Jews," he said. Now Necak is worried about the impending loss of Kosovo, a province that comprises 15 percent of Serbia's territory. Since NATO's bombardment of Serbia in 1999 drove Serb forces out of Kosovo and brought an international peacekeeping force into the ethnically Albanian province, Kosovo in effect has been a U.N. protectorate, though officially part of Serbia.

The Kosovo Albanians are counting on the United States and most European Union states to grant it recognition even at the risk of infuriating Serbia, whose leaders believe Serbia is unfairly paying for the mistakes of Milosevic. "It will be very bad for Jews" when the US recognizes Kosovo, Necak said, "because for many, the US and Jews are more or less the same. My phone is already ringing, friends from the government are calling. 'We like you, what will you tell to the newspapers about Kosovo?' "

We the undersigned residents of the region of Greek Macedonia,have noted that the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia is systematically violating the letter and the spirit of the Interim Accord of 1995, the European acquis communautaire, relevant international agreements such as UN Security Council Resolutions 817/1993 and 845/1993, as well as resolutions of the European Union in Brussels (16.12.1991), Guimaraes (3.5.1992), Lisbon (27.6.1992) and Edinburgh (12.12.1992), and, more recently (2005), the European Council’s call far a ‘speedy solution’ of the name issue;is promoting irredentist propaganda at the expense of Greek Macedonia and disseminates hostile feelings to its youth through textbooks at all levels of its educational system;is monopolizing for expansionist purposes, the name ‘Macedonia’, although only a fraction of the Macedonian territory falls under its jurisdiction;is appropriating Greek history and cultural heritage;is turning Greece’s own generosity against her, employing the incalculable financial support which Greece has supplied in so many ways.is deliberately provoking the Greek people, by offending official statements and acts and, despite its international legal commitments, refuses even to discuss a name acceptable to both parties and to the international community.

We, the 2.5 million Greek Makedones of Greek Macedonia, demand that our government exercise its right to prevent the accession of FYROM to the European Union and NATO, until such time as FYROM consents to a mutually acceptable name.We also demand of our government to allow the Greek people to express their view on the final decision through a national referendum.Greece and her people and especially we, the Makedones of Greek Macedonia, strongly object to the usurpation of our cultural heritage, the violation of our human right to retain our own identity and our dignity.Therefore, we ask the international community to show its solidarity with the Greeks of Macedonia, who are European citizens. This solidarity, which is based on international and Community law, is also an obligation under articles 58 of the Constitutional Treaty of Europe, currently awaiting ratification. One of the criteria for accession of a country to the EU is respect for the values enshrined in articles 1 and 2. Specifically, article 2 requires (and this requirement is reiterated in article 61) respect for and protection of the dignity of other members. The values which fellow members are required to respect, include the names of states, their principles, symbols, history, traditions and so on.

We bring to your attention other instances in which attempts have been made to make improper use of a country's name, and where a change in name has been required; for example - the cases of Austria, Ireland, the United Kingdom, the ex-Yugoslavia/Serbia, the Czech Republic, Belarus, etc.We appeal to the international organizations and the governments of countries which may have recognized EYROM under its so-called "constitutional name", and to all interested parties, emphasizing that:- The name in itself would not represent the essence of the problem if it was not being used as a vehicle for irredentist claims against Greece, as has already been apparent in the actions of our neighbour to date in invoking a ‘Macedonian’ minority in Greek Macedonia.- The problem of the deliberate distortion of history, with which we are all familiar, is a provocation to the Greek people, leading to destabilization across the broader region of Southeastern Europe.We ask you most earnestly to avert the destabilization of the Balkan countries.Greece assists and protects the multi-ethnic population of our neighbour FYROM, where Greek businesses are in the vanguard of foreign investors. Greece has more at stake than any other country in the stability of the region.You can be confident that your support for the Greeks of Macedonia is at the same time an indication of solidarity with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and, of course, with our shared European ideals.On the basis of the fundamental principles enshrined in UN and EU documents, we request your support for a solution which will not lead to the appropriation of Greek identity and will not entail possible territorial claims.

2008 Will Be The Year Of Protests, Demos, Battles

The Serbs are determined to not lose Kosovo, recently the liberal government currently ruling Belgrade had it out with State Department Undersecretary Burns, and word is that NATO/KFOR has padded up its military presence in Kosovo, in expectation of the coming declaration of Independence for Kosovo by Albanians, that is backed by NATO-America-EU, reports M Bozinovich blog...It may turn out to be a replay of 1999 , with all of us taking to the streets , once again, get ready to unfurl our flags.

And the Macedonian issue is coming to the fro' again, 2008 will be the expected date for Skopje to enter NATO, which means its borders will be secured, and the name issue, no thanks to the Athens incompetents, is yet to be solved, so far huge protests have taken place in Australia and Canada, there is planning NOW for a big protest in the USA, as well.

Let me begin by letting you all know that I am the son of Anatolians—my mother, Elli, was born in Boutza, a beautiful suburb of Smyrna one of Hellenism’s great cosmopolitan centers which tragically, like so many others, no longer exists. These Hellenic urban centers no longer exist not because of some natural disaster, economic circumstance, or voluntary migration; but because of the deliberate, systematic policy and actions of Ottoman and Turkish National governments to ethnically cleanse historically Greek lands which they perceived to be their own, through a process that scholars have identified as “Turkification.” Now you may think that this process and these matters are historical anomalies –“ancient history”--of interest only to pedantic scholars of obscure subjects, and unrelated to our modern world and the enlightened times in which we live. However, as I hope to demonstrate in the brief time allotted to me today—that the often used and tiresome phrases: “those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it” or “history repeats itself” are highly relevant to today’s subject and the destruction of Anatolian Hellenism. In fact, the process of Turkification is going on right now in parts of Cyprus and is nearly complete in Istanbul, once Hellenism’s cultural, political and religious center. Although, the process is largely ignored around the world—what is shocking is that it has recently begun to be accepted
Although, the process is largely ignored around the world—what is shocking is that it has recently begun to be accepted and even condoned within Greece itself-- in a misguided attempt to be “modern,” avoid the feeling of being a victim, and gain some ill-conceived political advantages.
In order to accomplish this, some Greeks are distorting their own history and have even promoted the re-writing of school-books which has recently raised some controversy there. I have also discovered that this is not an isolated phenomenon, limited to 1922 and the “Catastrophe” but has been extended to the entire history of Turkish-Greek relations, even to the degree of attempting to present the four-hundred years of Ottoman rule in Greece as largely benign! In fact, this radical rewriting of Greek history has been in process for several years and has the support of several Greek and non-Greek scholars with exceptional credentials and a large segment of the public in Greece.
What is especially odd to me is that this is all taking place when the Armenians after decades of struggle have finally won some measure of recognition of their own ethnic cleansing at the hands of the Turks during the same period. However, as AHI is well aware, even the Armenians, let alone the Greeks, have not been able to get the U.S. government to recognize their genocide as an official event---- a disgraceful example of political expediency and interest—which places “so-called” American strategic interests vis a vis Turkey above justice, historical accuracy and as I hope to prove—simple truths—facts which have been known to our government for over eighty-five years!
But let me return to the past for a moment and bring this tale of tragedy, greed, heroism—suffering on a massive scale—and also a time when individual Americans rose above government interest to commit what one courageous American woman called: “unauthrorized acts of humanity!”
Even today, among Greek speakers the term "the catastrophe" is commonly used to refer to the eradication of the Greek presence in Asia Minor. By the time the so-called exchange of populations was completed in 1924, most of the Greek communities that had survived thousands of years of foreign invasions and the assimilationist pressures of Ottoman Islam, were eradicated by the nationalist fervor of Turkish Kemalism. The precise number of the Greek population of Asia Minor and the numbers killed and expelled between 1909 and 1924, has been a topic of controversy among scholars and politicians. Recently, however the re-discovery and publication of census data long alluded to but little known, has shed new light upon this controversial subject.
Between 1910-12 the Greek government in collaboration with the Patriarchate conducted a census of the Greek Orthodox communities of Asia Minor utilizing consular officials and clergy. Data, recently published by Professors Kitromilides and Alexandris, show that the total of the Greek population of Asia Minor was at least 1,547,952 in 1912. The same scholars have compared this data with the Greek census of the Greek Asia Minor refugee population of Greece in 1928, which was 812,582 (including Constantinople). Using these figures one can conclude that loss of life among Anatolian Greeks during the WWI period and its aftermath was approximately 735,370 people. While these figures cannot be considered exact, they give a more precise idea of the dimension of the massacres conducted by Turkish authorities which wiped out the Greek communities of Asia Minor.
The subject of my book concerns what happened to one of these Greek communities, the city of Smyrna, widely considered to be the cultural and demographic center of the Hellenic presence in Asia Minor. The destruction of the city of Smyrna and the murder of a large portion of its Christian population made worldwide headlines during the month of September, 85 years ago. For almost a month, a quarter of a million people in Smyrna and its environs suffered every base act of cruelty known to man. In many cases, those killed outright, were more fortunate than many others who remained alive only to be tortured and suffer a painful and slow death. A martyr’s death was also the fate of Chrysostomos, the city’s Greek metropolitan who was literally torn to pieces by a Turkish mob.
Thousands flocked to the city’s long waterfront and begged to be taken aboard the many western ships that stood by watching this horrible spectacle without lifting a finger to help. These unfortunates were still there praying to God for divine intervention when on the fourth day of the slaughter the Christian portions of the city were consumed by flames. The great fire lasted for three days and not only forced the Greeks and Armenians from their hiding places, but obliterated the evidence of thousands of rotting corpses in the homes and narrow streets of the city.
Practically all of the American and British newspapers of the time held the army of Kemal Ataturk directly responsible for the massacre of thousands of innocent civilians and the setting of the great fire. These inhuman acts of barbarism were also condemned my many foreign observers who wrote about them or described them in interviews to the press. In their opinion, the fire and the massacres were part of an organized plan designed to solve the minority problem and cover up the murders that had taken place. Others more familiar with the history of the region also recognized that this destruction would result in the complete Turkification of Smyrna. Yet, even while the ruins of this ancient Christian city were still smoldering, the despicable minions of commercial interest worked hand in hand with the Turkish government to minimize the tragedy and absolve the Kemalists of all responsibility. For, in 1922, Turkey controlled the rich oil fields of Mosul, now part of Iraq, a rich prize which Kemal dangled before each of the western powers. Today, the Turkish government still denies that any systematic massacres of Greeks and Armenians took place in Smyrna or anywhere else in Asia Minor. Incredible as it may seem to some, it also claims that the fire that destroyed the Christian sections of the city was deliberately set by Greeks and/or Armenians.
This is the way an official Turkish biography of Kemal Ataturk prepared under the auspicious of the United Nations describes the events:
“On 10th September 1922 Gazi Mustafa Kemal drove into Izmir in a modest car amid wild scenes of popular excitement. Next to him sat the Chief of the General Staff, Marshal Fevzi Pasa.” He put up in a doctor’s house on the quayside, known as the (Premier Cordon), near the Kramer Palace. The hotel was burned down in the great fire which was started deliberately by enemy stragglers in Izmir on September 13th........ “

Since that time, several distinguished historians have also supported the Turkish position wholly or in part. The theories proposed can be summarized along the following lines:
On the question of massacres this "school" claims that there were no systematic massacres, that the civilians killed only amounted to a few thousand, and that any murders were work of undisciplined irregulars or unruly Turkish civilians who were taking vengeance for Greek atrocities.
On the question of the great fire, in addition to the idea that the Greek army and/or Armenian nationalists burned the city as part of premeditated plan; there circulates the position that the fire began by accident while Turkish troops were fighting armed Armenian civilians. Others argue, that the sources are too confused to place responsibility for the fire on any party, but that Turkish troops did everything they could to bring the fire under control. Some of the scholars who share one or more of these perspectives also maintain that one cannot rely on studies such as that of Marjorie Housepian’s because it leans too heavily upon biased Greek and Armenian sources So is it impossible to determine what happened in Smyrna utilizing the American material and who was responsible for the city's destruction? In order to shed some light on these issues, I decided to collect and study as many published American eyewitness accounts as I could find. Like many other before me, I believe that the American material is particularly important because America had not gone to war with Turkey, was a neutral power, and had no territorial ambitions there in 1922. This did not mean however, that the U.S. did not have commercial and other interests that it sought to protect, and as I discovered this had to be taken into account in evaluating the evidence.
Another reason why the American material is so valuable was that America had a major philanthropic presence in Smyrna which consisted of large two schools, a YMCA and a YWCA as well as a Consulate. Certainly some of the people employed there, I reasoned must have left some reliable account of what they saw and experienced.
I was not disappointed, for even a systematic reading of the New York Times for the month of September 1922 yielded valuable information. On September 7th, the New York Times carried an interview with the Rev. S. Harlow, professor of history at the American College in Smyrna who had just arrived in New York. In this article he relates details of Turkish massacres he says took place in the interior in which American friends were killed. He also states that::
The Turks are so pleased with their slaughter that they even have official pictures taken of the tortures and massacres. I had a lot of these official pictures which I gave to an American Consul to send to Washington. They show the Turkish Governor of a province, a Turkish General and the high priests and other officials, dressed in their best, smiling and looking on at the executioner performing his tortures below them.

Thus, it would seem that even before one Turkish soldier set foot in the city, the Kemalists had indicated that there might be massacres in Smyrna, and at least one American missionary was reporting that massacres were already occurring in the city’s hinterland. The New York Times continued to print American eyewitness accounts as survivors arrived in New York and even hired an American on the scene who acted as a special correspondent and wired first-hand reports to the paper from Turkey. In addition to the New York Times’s special correspondent, the Chicago Tribune also had a reporter in Smyrna whose reports were deemed so valuable that they were also carried by several British and American papers. These special reports were supplemented by stories drawn from the Associated Press which utilized a wide variety of western sources.
There are at least three published accounts of the Smyrna holocaust by American eyewitness that are particularly rich in detail. The first and most important is by George Horton, the U.S. Consul in Smyrna, an American with thirty years of diplomatic experience in Greece and Turkey and who was fluent in six languages including Greek and Turkish. Forced to flee the American consulate which was burned in the great fire, he was so outraged by his experience in Smyrna that he wrote a devastating indictement of the behavior of the Turks entitled The Blight of Asia in 1926. Horton not only relates details of what he himself saw but gathers together and reproduces the testimony of other Americans, particularly missionaries who corroborate the opinions and accusations he makes in his book.
Another account, that of Dr. Oran Raber, is extremely valuable because it independently corrobortes many details of Horton’s account. Dr. Raber was an Assistant Professor of Botany on a trip through Europe who just happened to be in Smyrna that fateful September. This tourist, fluent in Italian and German, not only kept a careful record of his observations but describes a conversation he had with Turkish civilians who admitted to him that massacres had indeed occured and that he had better stay away from the Armenian quarter. Concerning the fire, Dr. Raber reports that:
Instead of attempting to extinguish the fire, the Turks, thoroughly enraged, aided and directed it by petrol. Kemal no longer had control of his forces, and from that time till Friday morning the city was the property of the strongest and the least principled..... From what I saw and from evidence collected from both Turks and Greeks, there is only one conclusion: The burning of Smyrna was the work of the Turks.

A third published American eyewitness account is by Dr. Ester Lovejoy who was President of the Medical Women’s International Association. She arrived in Smyrna on September 24th after the great fire but in time to see and care for the thousands of destitute civilians who were being forcibly deported from their homes. She describes details of how entire families were brutally robbed and beaten, girls were abducted and raped and males above the age of fifteen sent to forced labor camps or executed. Again, her account is independently corroborated by other eyewitness reports published in the American press.
I cannot go into detail concerning each of these—because of our lack of time. However, I will highlight some specific U.S. government documents which deserve to be better known.
My friend and colleague, Professor Speros Vryonis Jr. has suggested that the destruction of Anatolian Hellenism during the twentieth century can be divided into three phases: the first begins with the end of the Balkan Wars in 1913-14 and ends with Turkey's entrance into the First World War. During this phase, 130,000 Greeks from communities in around the Dardanelles were forced to move and Turkish refugees from the Balkans took their place, ---while other Greeks fled to Greece and there were extensive massacres in places like Phokikon. Consistripted work battalions-- forced labor for men into the interior -heavy labor caused approximately 250,000 perished in labor battalions forced deportations become more widespread, over 750,000 Greeks removed from western Asia Minor removed under harsh circumstances into the interior. In Pontos there is a massive removal of population with the exception of Trebezoind 250,000 removed 80,000 fled to Russia. The numbers of people massacred are disputed, however, these persecutions affected over a million Greeks. The second phase spans from the start to the end of the WWI and includes the landing of Greek Troops in Asia Minor in 1919 and ends in 1923. It resulted in the complete destruction of Anatolian Hellenism. The third phase concerns the remnants of Greeks that remained in Constantinople (the subject of Vryonis’ recent book), those of Imvros and Tenedos—and I would add the Turkification of a large portion of Cyprus which is currently underway.
Let us turn to some specific American sources concerning Smyrna and see how they relate to our own day…
In a U.S. State Department document dated July 6, 1922, the Secretary of State referred to negotiations with Turkish Nationalist authorities concerning railway, mining and other commercial rights in Anatolia. Unofficial commercial representatives were negotiating with a government not yet recognized by the U.S. for economic gain—in the midst of war and the widespread massacre of Christians. Other documents refer to the so-called Chester Concessions—pre-WWI commercial agreements that were being re-negotiated at this time.
By going through the U.S. State Dept. archives, I have found that our government not only had economic representatives on the scene, but as one would expect, intelligence officers connected to the military whose job was to report on and supplement information being sent to Washington through official diplomatic channels such as Consul Horton. I was delighted to find that one of these reports documents that the U.S. State Department knew that the Turks burned the city and why.
The first is a dispatch sent to Admiral Bristol, the U.S. High Commissioner by Lieutenant Merrill his naval intelligence officer in Smyrna. This is what it says:
Constantinople: Dated September 15, 1922. Received 3pm
Sent to Secretary of State, Washington D.C.
Following from Smyrna: “Fourteenth. Am convinced Turks burned Smyrna except Turkish section conforming with definite plan to solve Christian minority problem by forcing allies evacuate Christian minorities. Believe they will no prepare for an attack on Constantinople Merrill.”

The second is a telegram received and read by Hughes, the U.S. Secretary of State—which reads:
Secstate U.S.S. Maryland No. 50 for Hughes
My/44, September/15,/3p.m.
Situation in Near East extremely acute, with possibility of complications which will involve Great Britain and Allies in war with Turkey….
……. Confidential reports received from our many officials at Smyrna, and British Foreign Office, indicate that Turks burned the city in conformity with definite plan to solve the Christian minority problem by forcing the evacuation of the minorities. The return of several hundred thousand Christians to their homes is apparently made impossible by the wholesale destruction of villages by retreating Greeks as well as by advancing Turks.
Reports indicate heavy loss of American property in Smyrna. Native Americans are all safe. No further details received regarding missing naturalized citizens. Three American destroyers are still in Smyrna assisting relief workers and protecting the American property which escaped the fire…..
These two documents prove that the U.S. government received information that it considered reliable shortly after the great fire which indicated that the Turks had deliberately destroyed the city as a matter of policy. Yet, when Henry Cabot Lodge, a prominent U.S. Senator with ties to the Greek-American community sent an official inquiry to the State Department as to what happened in Smyrna and asked who was responsible for the fire; the Secretary responded that:
“As far as the author’s of the fires, apparently of incendiary origin, which
brought on the Smyrna conflagration have never been apprehended, nor
their identity discovered. On this point conflicting evidence has been
received by the Dept. and the various antagonistic racial groups in
Smyrna have each ascribed the origin of the fire to the other….”
Clearly, the Secretary of State knew more than he was willing to make public at that
time…. Does this constitute a cover-up and lying to Congress? You be the judge!
Other U.S. documents shed fascinating insights into other aspects of U.S.—Turkish relations at that time. For example, despite the Secretary’s emphatic statements in his response to Senator Lodge that the U.S. flag and its citizens and property were respected and not violated by the Turks—we later learn that the Turkish government sent him an official apology concerning an incident related to George Dilboy, a Greek-American Medal of Honor winner and one of the most celebrated war heroes of WWI. In fact, his casket wrapped in the American flag was violated and insulted by Turkish troops and his remains scattered in the Church in Alachati, Asia Minor. American eyewitness accounts also document that the homes of American residents were violated and looted.
Finally, I must mention a document I found in the household and supplies files of the U.S. Consulate in Smyrna housed in the National Archives. The document contains a report by Maynard M. Barnes who had been Vice Consul under H
Horton. After the Consulate was burned and the Consul had been evacuated to Greece, Barnes was promoted to Consul replacing Horton in Smyrna. In a report to the State Department, Consul Barnes describes the spacious and inexpensive new consulate building that the Kemalists leased to the United States and emphasizes that it was so much better than the old one. In fact, the building had previously been the residence of a wealthy Armenian family that had fled after the great fire and was now being leased to the U.S. by authorities that our government still did not officially recognize. Imagine if an American diplomat was recorded bragging about having taken over Jewish property in Europe twenty years later during that holocaust while the victims were still being massacred! Such an injustice would have been condemned and apologized for. Yet this incident like so much about Smyrna and the destruction of Anatolian Hellenism remains little known.
How do these events of eighty-five years ago relate to current international politics? Well, a few weeks ago Alan Greenspan a Washington insider and former Fed Chairman remarked that the war in Iraq is directly related to oil. Remember the Mosul oil fields and the Kurds mentioned in the Smyrna documents. There is also much current international discussion about the various competing routes for the gas pipelines that will bring precious natural energy resources to the West from the former Soviet Union. One route would go through Turkey while others would flow from Bulgaria and Greece. The more things change the more they stay the same. The power politics and economic interests of 1922 are still with us in 2007.
However, ladies and gentlemen it is up to us to be vigilant and lobby for justice and truth. As my friend and colleague, Dan Georgakas reminded me when I told him I was giving this lecture here today; we must act like the border guards – the akrites of Byzantium. Here at AHI its leaders are definitely akrites involved in defending Hellenism every day. It is an honor for me to have been invited by Gene Rossides and Nick Lagadakis to speak to you today and to honor and remember the victims of 1922; I thank you for your kind attention and eternal be the memory of those we have lost.

Protests are mounting against plans for a Croatian rock star, Marko Perkovic, who critics say glorifies the Nazis, to perform in New York.

The performer, known as Thompson, combines folk-inspired melodies with the electric thrill of heavy metal and nationalistic lyrics.

While Thompson's songs promote love of God, family, and his nation, the singer and songwriter is also said to glorify war and Croatia's Nazi past, and that has groups lining up in protest of his two New York shows at the Croatian Center in Midtown next month.

In past concerts, he has performed an anthem of the country's Nazi-backed military regime — the Ustasha — that references extermination camps where tens of thousands of Jews, Serbs, and Gypsies were killed during World War II. He greets adoring crowds with a famous Ustasha slogan — and many respond with the Nazi salute.

"To glorify what happened during the Holocaust is not what we need in the world today, nor do we need it in this city — after the events we have recently been through. To play with that for the sake of music, or even conviction, I find it totally repugnant," the director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center's Task Force Against Hate, Mark Weitzman, said.

Mr. Weitzman said his group is in conversations with the Croatian Embassy, whose government has been trying to distance the country from the strong nationalism of the 1990s as part of a serious bid to join the European Union in 2010.

"I get the sense that they are not very happy about the concert, but I'm not sure how they are going to respond. Hopefully there will be the right response," Mr. Weitzman said.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Jewish human rights nonprofit that has been monitoring Mr. Perkovic's performances for several years, has also asked the Croatian Embassy in Washington to publicly repudiate the band as part of the country's commitment to international treaties denouncing the Holocaust, and to forgo working with any institution that supports the tour.

Last week, organizers of a Thompson concert planned in Toronto next month cancelled after pressure from the Canadian offices of the Task Force Against Hate. The group is now in conversations with the venue that is to host their Vancouver appearance, as well as to police there, said Leo Adler, director of national affairs.

Mr. Adler said in Canada, where there is a lower threshold for what constitutes hate speech, there is a chance that Thompson's lyrics could violate the law. In America, freedom of speech is more protected, he noted.

The director of the Anti-Defamation League, Abraham Foxman, said he hoped education and exposure of the band's background would convince people to not attend their concerts. "The sad part is how popular they are in Croatia and that they are now coming here to appeal to U.S. Croats to almost justify the Holocaust," Mr. Foxman said.

"It's a free country, and people can choose to be offensive. We are not in the business of censorship or shutting people down, but we do hope that when people understand what they are about they will not want to hear them play," he added.

For Serbs living in America, whose minority population in Croatia was decimated during WWII and the Balkan wars of the 1990s between Serbs and Croats, Thompson's songs strike a particularly sensitive chord.

"He is singing about genocide against a people who were ethnically cleansed. It's intolerable," a development officer at NYU, Radosh Piletich, 35, said. Mr. Piletich is part of a loose group of Serbian-Americans in New York who would like to see the concert canceled and have lodged complaints with the office of Rep. Jerrold Nadler, in whose congressional district the concert will be taking place.

"I would like to stop the concert. I would like to stop the hatred. I don't understand how we can be in the 21st century and allow this type of language to take place," a man whose grandmother was killed by Ustasha during the war, Tom Djurdjevich, 37, said.

"If you listen to his lyrics, it celebrates butchery. It's beyond inhumane. He talks about gouging out of eyes and sawing off of heads," Mr. Djurdjevich continued.

One of the New York events' organizers, George Corluka, of Syndicate Productions, did not return calls and emails requesting comment.

But patrons at several Croatian bars in Astoria, Queens, where tickets for Mr. Perkovic's performance are being sold for $45, dismissed the importance of Thompson's extremist rhetoric, saying he is just appealing to a young nationalist sentiment long repressed by the Communist regime that gripped the country following World War II.

"Everybody says he's a good person. He's singing about genocide in the context of a war," said a painter, Marko Marienovich, 42, whose 21-year old daughter has made plans to go hear Thompson play said. "What he's singing about, he went through. He sings about the things he saw."

Many said they respect the fact that Mr. Perkovic is a veteran in the war between the Croats and Serbs. He earned his stage name from an American-issued submachine gun used by the Croats.

"He's a Croatian hero. You are going to see how many people show up for his show," a retiree, Boris Yurisic, 47, said.

So far, tickets for Mr. Perkovic's November 2 concert at the Croatian Center on 41st Street in Manhattan — which holds 700 people — are sold out. Tickets for a second concert the following day, scheduled due to strong demand, will soon go on sale. The Croatian Center adjoins the Roman Catholic Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius and St. Raphael, on 10th Avenue. Calls to the church offices were not picked up.

A spokesman for the Archdiocese of New York, Joseph Zwilling, said he didn't know about the concert or the artist and therefore couldn't comment. "I'd have to contact the Parish about this and we'll have to investigate it, certainly," he said.

I brought-up the Mearsheimer and Walt book: The Israel Lobby. I asked if he agreed with Abe Foxman's response to the book and he said he did not know what Abe Foxman wrote on the subject but probably would agree with whatever he has to say.

Then he continued with a disoriented response starting with "the book is bullshit!" And when on to say:

"Aipac does not influence US foreign policy in the Middle East. The book is no different from The Protocols of the Elders of Zion and these two guys are anti-Semites just like Henry Ford's writings."

I intentionally digressed away from his emotional response by congratulating him for voting against the war. Then he told me him he found it fascinating he was the only White Congressman in New York City that voted against the war. As he told it:

"All the Black and Hispanic congressmen voted against the war and all the White ones voted for it. And I was the only White that voted against it. I am mesmerized how the vote is split along racial lines."

I went back to talking about the book and asked if he was going to read it. "Why should I," he continued "give them my money for their ant-Semitic ranting. I will never buy that book!"

Then we said our good-byes.

Last night I drove up to the UCLA Hammer Museum to hear Professors John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt discuss the Israel Lobby and its deleterious effects on US Middle East policy. When we got there (a prominent activist was with me) we were greeted by some Hillel types who handed us brochures decrying the speakers' views and comparing them to the Protocols and Henry Ford's work. My friend's picture appeared on the back of the brochure as a virulent anti-semite who endorsed the authors. Fortunately, with his glasses on, no one recognized him!

When we got to the window we were told that the event had sold out and we were directed to a gallery where we could watch the talk on a movie screen, which worked out fine. I estimated that there were about 300 in attendance and maybe half were Jewish.

The speakers were excellent and on-message. It was clear that they've honed their presentation skills and they came across as likable, engaging intellectuals while being committed to their positions. They refer to one another as Steve and John, so I will too. Steve spoke first and described the Lobby and its influence. He stated that he was a supporter of Israel but regretted that he and Prof. Mearsheimer had been condemned as anti-semites but acknowledged that was the price one had to pay when critiquing the Lobby and its influence. He described the Lobby's activities as "American as apple pie" and compared it to the NRA, the oil lobby and AARP! But, after uttering the required bromides, he described how the Lobby controls discourse on Israel, rewards its friends and ruins its detractors. He said that, while candidates may differ on affirmative action, immigration, taxes, etc., they are uniformly in favor of a strong and continuing US commitment to the Jewish State. Steve is the younger of the two and has an extremely engaging and attractive speaking style. He's hard to demonize as a raging anti-semite.

Next up was Prof. Mearsheimer, the more professorial and older of the two. John spoke about the key role the Lobby played in the run-up to the Iraq War and quoted many sources proving the connection. He implied that the Iraq War was waged primarily for Israel's sake and downplayed the Wilsonian and oil-related rationales. He talked about the reasons for 9-11 and asserted that our actions in the Middle East and our diehard support of Israel were the main causes of the 9-11 attacks. As in the book, I was amazed at how strongly and convincingly they attacked the Lobby and how incendiary these comments are in today's environment.

After the professors' presentations, the Q and A session began. The first three questioners were Jews. The first was a female who stated that she, as a historian, was appalled by the shoddy research and citations they used. John and Steve dispatched her accusations deftly and received applause. The next questioner was a rabbi who rambled on for about ten minutes before finally asking his question. The third was a a self-described Israel supporter and Jew who stated that he was a professor at UCLA and agreed with some of the speakers' positions. The rest of the questions were from Gentiles and generally were supportive of the two. All in all, a fairly mild reaction to speakers who have been demonized in the press, most recently by Los Angeles Times columnist Tim Rutten. There was no Jewish wailing about anti-semitism or hissing and booing.

After the session, the authors signed books and I was delighted to speak with them briefly and get their signatures.

My impression is that these two are formidable opponents for the Lobby, if they can gain a wider audience. They are affable, glib and approachable. They resolutely stand their ground and can parry with the best of the Talmudists. They're not ready for our circle yet and their paeans to Israel's right to exist and the need to defend it are probably necessary inoculations to the baser charges of hate that are leveled against them. We have to be happy that these brave scholars and Jimmy Carter have taken such heat for their recent publicized positions and support them as they get their message out. They will prepare the way for more open debate about the Lobby and Jewish control in general.

On Tuesday evening four of us drove from our office in Costa Mesa to attend a meeting in Los Angeles at which professors Stephen Walt and John Mearsheimer were to talk about their new book, The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy. (By the way, the book is now on the Los Angeles Times best-seller list.)

In their prepared presentations, Walt and Mearsheimer summarized the content of their book, and emphasized its main points, with Walt presenting the work's first half, and his colleague the second. Each man was in good form and each spoke with authority and confidence. They also handled themselves calmly and knowledgeably during the sometimes contentious question and answer session.

The main hall of the Hammer Museum where the meeting took place was packed, and many of those who had come to hear the authors were directed to an adjacent hall where they followed the proceedings on a large screen. Although there was a minority of unhappy Jews among the attendees, the audience was overwhelmingly sympathetic and supportive. Among those who attended was Tom Hayden.

At the book-signing session afterwards, the authors autographed copies of their book, including one I had bought (and read) a few weeks earlier.

An amusing sidelight: Jewish activists handed out to attendees flyers denouncing Walt and Mearsheimer. One of the hand-outs was an eight-page, full-color brochure that included, on the last page under the headline "Extremists Endorse `The Israel Lobby'," a photo of me and a quote from me about the book. Many people are today aware of the genocide the Assyrian people suffered during WWI at the hands of the Turks and their hired killers, the Kurds. Many also know that this genocide, called Seyfo by Assyrians, is an incredibly controversial issue among Turks, who refuse to this today to accept any accusations of genocide in spite of the conclusions made by independent scholars who have studied the issue.

This Turkish-Assyrian issue caused many headlines in the Swedish media in the last two weeks. It started during a speech of the leader of the social democratic party, Mona Sahlin, in Stockholm on the 12 August 2007. When informed that Mona Sahlin was to hold a speech in town, an Assyrian group prepared a leaflet with the message "Recognize the genocide against the Assyrians." Also present during the speech of the social democratic leader was a Turkish group from the local area.

Chaos ensued. The Turkish group started making threats and demanding that the leaflet of the Assyrian group be taken down. Feeling the pressure and the threats of the Turkish group, the social democratic representatives started demanding from the Assyrians to take down the leaflet. The Assyrians took down the leaflet reluctantly.

The following day the uproar started in the Swedish media. The debate evolved around whether Swedish society should submit to threats made by Turks or other groups who do not respect the freedom of speech. Many influential persons expressed solidarity with the Assyrians and called for the Seyfo genocide to be recognized.

The social democratic party was shaken by the event and the harsh criticism against it for not standing up for the freedom of speech. Several newspapers also criticized the party for not officially recognizing the genocide on Assyrians because of Turkish threats and diplomatic pressure.

The complete text in English translation of an important book about "Jewish ritual murder" is now posted on-line. The "Abravanel" postings are quite suspect. I doubt he is a real person since his posts reflect verbatim false claims ( made by Wiesental Center proved false a couple of year ago) and placed in State Department reports and then removed when the translations were shown to be false.

"Abravanel" does not allow comments on his/her blog. I politely wrote to the published address twice with a half dozen requests for consideration of factual corrections (based on the process the State department used when it discovered the "burning of the Jew" was actually th e "Burning of Judas"), the arapos translations and a number of other points.

I also noted that the serious peer reviewed anthropologists and historians note hat the scapegoat burning ritual actually began in both the Near Eat and in Europe as a Jewish practice associated with the holiday of Purim and indeed that well into the late 19th century that instead of burning the persian "haman" in Eastern Anatolia the purim practice was the burning of the "Amolkite Armenian." (documented in the Princeton University published "Reckless Rites: Purim and the Legacy of Jewish Violence" by noted Israeli hisotrian Elliott Horowitz.)

Devious Diva then published "Abravanel" on the Salonika cemetary. As wrote again asking hy this was not in context. I showed how this issue began immediately after the scandal of massive and long standing Greek Orthodox, Catholic and Moslem cemetaries in Israel being paved over in Israel by developers, especially settlers, and the case of the the Jerusalem Hilton being over a very long established cemetery. Again no response.

He wrote on another blog about the Holocaust in Greece -- blamed the Greeks and praised the Bulgarians. He ignored the fact the Bulgarians occupiers had a higher kill rate of Jews in Greece than did the Germans. No response. My guess is "Abravanel" a blog put up by a pressure group which seeks to deflect criticism of Israel by point out policies of Greece, which it turns out are not 1/10 as draconian as those in Israel.

Also Devious Diva seems to be a regular and flattering commenter of the very xenopobic hate site "discaredlies."

I agree completely with Vryonis's historical assessment of Turkey's history , especially its state policy of Greek Genocide since its very birth as a nation, Vryonis is Harvard-educated and former Byzantine studies chair at UCLA, its about time his work gets published and discussed in Greece. Videos 3-6 are especially interesting, because in them Vryonis confronts the false historical revisionism and falsehoods by Greek pseudo-intellectuals who try to cover up for Turkey's crimes.

My only disagreement is his final prediction that Turkey's future is one of civil war, if one just looks back at the Turkish success over the past 600 yrs, one will see glaringly that the Turks through their manipulations and lies and deceit have been able to survive and conquer and they will do so in this century as well, I believe, at our Greek expense as usual, and as usual it will be when we least expect it....

Ulsterman escapes fires in Greece

An Ulsterman living in Greece last night told how his home was saved from one of the raging forest fires which have swept across the country, claiming more than 60 lives.

Dr David Green (63), who is originally from Belfast, said Russian pilots in firefighting helicopters managed to control a massive blaze which broke out on a mountain opposite his Athens apartment.

Hundreds of forest fires have devastated parts of Greece and killed at least 63 people.

The Greek government declared a state of emergency over the weekend as fires, fanned by hot, gusting winds, continued to break out around the country.

"Our home is opposite Mount Hymettos and that was hit two days ago," Dr Green, a former lecturer, told the Belfast Telegraph.

"The whole of our area was covered in smoke.

"There were huge Russian helicopters which came to help. They were passing our window about every half an hour."

Dr Green said the firefighting aircraft skimmed the sea, lapping up water, before dropping it on the flames.

"Luckily our home wasn't damaged.

"That was the nearest it came to us.

He added: "It was frightening, and it has been pretty horrendous."

Dr Green, who moved to Greece in 1994, said he and his wife, Flora, are concerned about future fires.

"We are actually about 50ft from a forest ourselves.

"Obviously we are very, very concerned.

"But we are a bit more reassured after my wife contacted the local mayor's office and the small forest is patrolled every night by police now.

"If it catches fire we are in real trouble. But we feel a good bit safer," he said.

However the former principal of Antrim Technical College revealed the blazes have had a huge ecological impact.

"There are just tragic sights of sheep and goat carcasses lying burnt out," he said. "There was a deer in the nearby forest with no food because all the forest has been burnt out.

"Undoubtedly this will have a huge ecological effect.

"The local people are in a state of shock, in fear, and afraid to move.

"Athens itself, and the surrounding hills are all forested. It would break your heart to see what has happened to the beautiful pine trees."

However, Dr Green has dismissed suggestions that the cause of the fires is terrorism.

"There are conspiracy theories that it was terrorists, but I frankly don't believe that it was.

"I think there are some unscrupulous developers who are involved, together with extremely hot weather, high winds, and common garden rubbish, such as discarded tins and bottles."

Dr Green added that he has been "touched" by messages from concerned relatives and friends about his safety.

"Both myself and my wife have been lucky, but Greece is now in deep shock and even deeper mourning."

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5 on the Richter scale struck the fire-ravaged area in the south of Greece yesterday, panicking residents, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

THE WEEKEND WE WATCHED HORRIFIED AS GREECE BURNED.

Athens, August 27, 2007

This was a weekend of National Tragedy here in Greece. People from all over the country sat glued to their television sets, calling friends and loved ones in villages all over Greece. We sat fascinated and horrified by the sights and sounds of villages, people, animals burning. There were too few planes, too few firemen, no organization, no planned routes of escape.

The heroes of the weekend turned out to be the newscasters who hour after hour took calls from frightened people begging for help, who then called various Mayors and authorities to send help to those stranded. Amazingly for three days there were no accusations and the country pulled together as a whole. The other heroes were the citizens, the ordinary Greek citizens, who left the safety of their homes and ran to help with the raging fires, with whatever they had in hand, usually branches from trees. The villagers who with tractors and trucks fought to preserve their villages. Alas, it didn't work. It is the fourth day and still Greece is burning.

Friday night we sat and waited for news of the mother and her four children who had called her husband to say she was leaving the village which was close to burning. She and the children never made it. They were found on the road in their car with the mother hugging the four little ones. This is an indescribable horror for us as a nation. We saw videos of burned cars with their victims in their metal tombs, while relatives tried to identify the occupants. Hour after hour, the television relentlessly recorded new catastrophes and we were unable to shut off the sets. New fires, here, there, everywhere. New anxieties about loved ones, even here in Athens when Hymittos was purposefully set on fire and that fire engulfed a 5 story apartment building. The Attiki Road was closed and all cars were routed right into the fire area.

We returned from our vacation in the Peloponissos last week. The natural beauty and elegance of the mountains and the sea is an unbelievable sight. Or was. To think that now most of it is gone. To think that maybe the grandmas and grandpas who rode along those narrow country roads on their donkeys and who herded their sheep and goats may be a thing of the past. Imagine that we may never again sit in a villager's house and eat and drink everything which is from their own land. Imagine we will never be able to buy fruit, eggs, honey and wine at the road-side stands. How is it possible in only four days? How can our lives change so much?

The press is starting to ask the probing questions. I will leave that to them. Clearly these apocalyptic happenings are not by chance. Is it a new form of terrorism? Is it political?

For us, those who fervently love the earth and its people, the question is: What can we do? How can we help? Whom do we contact? The answer is simple for those of us living here. When the fires are put out, we will go and visit and see what is needed. We will provide whatever we can.

US gave full backing to Turkish invasion

THE United States gave full blessing to the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, even assuring Turkey that it would "get them a solution involving one third of the island.''

This cynical US involvement is revealed in the latest batch of secret official State Department documents released for publication under the 30-year rule.

The American stand has long been known, but this is the first time that it has been confirmed so completely by an official State Department document.

This is clarified in the very first paragraph of the document which is stamped ``SECRET/EYES ONLY.''

It declares that the only conceivable settlement of the Cyprus problem "will have to rest on a de facto division of the island, whatever the form."

While admitting that the United States ``has the clout'' to prevent the invasion, the document nevertheless advises against doing so "before the fighting stops."

The document is dated August 14, 1974, the exact date of the second massive wave of the Turkish invasion of the island. It is headed: ``Memorandum for the Secretary - Cyprus Actions'' from Helmut Sonnenfeldt, one of the top State Department officials dealing with Greco-Turkish affairs.

The document even includes a map detailing the plan of action of the Turkish invasion force. This is headed ``Map done by the Bureau of Intelligence and Research projecting Turkish moves on Cyprus, August 13, 1974.''

It is worth noting that this plan was the one followed exactly by the Turkish troops, a further proof of the close American involvement in the Turkish invasion planning.

SUBJECT: Cyprus Actions

You wanted some brief ideas on what we do next.

Nothing I can think of will stop the Turks now from trying to secure by force what they demanded in their ultimata. In fact, as has always been true, the only coneivable modus vivendi will have to rest on a de facto division of the island, whatever the form.

If the Turks move fast and can then be gotten to stand down, it may pre-empt Greek counteraction and then give us a chance to try for a deal. (It may also save Karamanlis).

While the Soviets can serve as a bogey, we must keep them at arms length. They cannot become the arbiter between US allies. Their interests differ drastically from ours: we want a modus vivendi between Greece and Turkey, they want a non-aligned Cyprus, preferably with Greece or Turkey or both disaffected from NATO.

Thus, we should

- urgently try to contain Greek reaction; 24 hours at a time;

- bluntly tell the Turks they must stop, today, tomorrow at the latest;

- warn the Turks that Greece is rapidly moving leftward;

- send high-level US man to Athens to exert continuing direct influence on Karamanlis;

- assuming the Turks quickly take Famagusta, privately assure Turks we will get them solution involving one third of island, within some kind of federal arrangement;

- assure Greeks we will contain Turk demands and allow no additional enclaves, etc.

You should not get involved directly till the fighting stops; then you must since there is no alternative and only we have the clout.

I do not think Brussels/NATO is the place to use when the time comes. The Greeks are probably too sore at NATO and the vehicle of a ministerial meeting is awkward. Anyway, you need Ecevit and Karamanlis.

London may be unacceptable to the Turks because of Callaghan’s blast at them.

You should not shuttle.

This may mean Geneva. Washington, at the President’s initiative, would be all right but hard to get the parties to come to. Also provocative of the Russians. New York would make it difficult to keep the Russians away.

You could also try Rome.

The 700,000 strong Muslim community in the wider Attica region, growing mainly due to an influx of Asian migrants looking for work, had been pressing the Greek government for decades to consider a location for a mosque.

Plans for a mosque to be built ahead of the Athens 2004 Olympics had faltered with Muslims objecting to the remote location selected at the time.

It was not until last year that predominantly Orthodox Christian Greece earmarked a location in western Athens.

Construction on that project has yet to commence. ''This is a start. Work with the government is progressing well to build a proper mosque. This does not fit all of us but it is important that this has happened, '' Gandour said.

There is a dated letter succinctly addressing the impotence of "our" Greek lobby in Washington DC, the excerpt below expresses perfectly the direction, we believe the Bush administration, is headed in, soon after Kosovo is "solved":

Q: “According to CNN, your commercial officer in your embassy in Ankara is going to visit the occupied area of Cyprus accompanied by a big US commercial company’s representative.”

Boucher: “Basically true, but flip it around. There is an American business delegation that’s coming to the northern part of Cyprus from Turkey. It’s a private delegation that’s looking at potential business opportunities in the north. This delegation is consistent with our goal of using the economic isolation of the Turkish Cypriots by expanding business contacts on and off the island. And the group will be accompanied by a US commercial attache from our embassy in Ankara. He’s going along to help facilitate their work. That’s standard practice worldwide with business delegations.”

Well. Not exactly. Diplomatic etiquette and practice teaches that this is most unusual in cases of disputed areas that have been occupied — remember — by sheer military force. Yet, sure enough, any US president is entitled to his vision

Excellent Serb Hellenic Forums Commentary On The Greek Mass Media Blackout On Nationalist And National Issues In Greece

I don't know how many Greeks know specifically about this incident but I know that mainstream newspapers and news channels suppress news that has the potential to reinforce national and religious feelings.

For example, about a year ago anarchists attacked three Greek students with hammers, tire irons, and saws because one of them was seen wearing a shirt with a Greek flag on it. Two of the three students suffered serious, life-threatening injuries, with one of them falling into a coma. Despite the fact that the media goes into a frenzy for days, if not weeks, when there is a rumor of an attack on a leftist, homosexual, or foreigner, absolutely nothing was reported on this incident on any major television channels even though there are eyewitness reports that those channels had initially sent reporters to get information on what had happened. Likewise, the police did not seriously investigate the attack since they have a policy of not investigating criminal or terrorist acts committed against nationalists. As a result, nationalists numbered in the hundreds held a vigil outside of the hospital where the Greek student was being cared for. Although a television station was again on the scene to take statements, no television station reported on the vigil. As it was obvious that the media was suppressing all news of this event, nationalists held a protest outside one of the television stations that had investigated the incident but never broadcast any news reports regarding it. Despite the protest, the station in question did not broadcast news about the attack or about the protest. In reaction to this news blackout, nationalists from European countries who were informed of what had happened staged demonstrations in their own countries to show solidarity with the victims and to show that terrorism by the state would not be tolerated. In fact, Italian nationalists not only occupied the offices of two Greek ferries to help bring attention to the situation in Greece but also directly appealed to the Euro-Parliament. Alessandra Mussolini, granddaughter of Benito Mussolini and a member of the Euro-Parliament, formally brought attention to the incident, along with the media's blackout and the police's failure to investigate the crime, to the Euro-Parliament by calling for initiatives to be taken against the Greek political establishment for maintaining a climate of violence against nationalists. One would think that this act would have earned attention in the Greek media, but it didn't. (For more information regarding this incident, see Brutal attack on Greek students by Anarchists.)

When the media cannot suppress news and the people become informed and outraged over the political establishment's actions, the political establishment does not change its position because of public opinion -- regardless of mass mobilizations.

For instance, several years ago the political establishment decided to remove all references to religion off of the Greek identification cards in an attempt to slowly secularize the country. Since the Church is powerful and cannot be ignored, this issue gained much media attention, even outside of Greece. The majority of Greeks realized that the establishment was trying to minimize Orthodoxy so, with the Church leading them, massive protests, sometimes numbering in the hundreds of thousands, occurred. In addition, the Church managed to collect a petition of over three million signatures calling for a national referendum to determine the matter. More people signed this petition than the number of people who voted into office the party who made these changes to the identification cards. These examples should give you an idea of how terrible the situation is. That said, I should also note that when the Greek political establishment announced its plans to create a mosque in Athens (since there are no mosques in the city), many Greeks were very opposed to the idea (and still are). So it goes without saying that Greeks would be equally opposed to the establishment building mosques in areas that belong to Orthodox Christians, like Sarajevo. Unfortunately, Greeks are kept uninformed by the establishment and, when they manage to become informed, there is not much they can do to force the establishment to listen to them.

ADL Urges Orthodox Christian Churches To Excise Anti-Semitism From Liturgy

New York, NY, June 6, 2007 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is urging the world's Orthodox Christian leaders to support a Christian proposal to excise ancient anti-Semitic passages from their liturgy.

ADL cited a declaration by an independent group of Orthodox Christian priests and intellectuals who are calling for their churches to reject centuries-old negative theological positions toward Jews and Judaism, including positions on the State of Israel. The group represents five different Orthodox churches, including Greek, Ukrainian, Russian, Georgian and Ecumenical Orthodox Churches. Some signed the declaration in defiance of their church leadership, according to news reports.

"We call on Orthodox Christian leaders to begin the process now to remove anti-Semitic passages from its liturgy," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "This effort is long overdue. Untold numbers of Jews have suffered throughout the centuries, and today, in some countries where these churches are prominent, Jews are confronted by growing anti-Semitism, because of the failure to address this."

Eric J. Greenberg, ADL Associate Director of Interfaith Affairs, noted that some Orthodox liturgy still refer to Jews as Christ-killers, and that some Easter services include calls for revenge against Jews. He noted that the Roman Catholic Church and several Protestant churches have removed anti-Semitic passages from its liturgy, and that the Vatican repudiated the deicide charge against the Jewish people in 1965.

"We commend the courageous priests and academics who seek to rid their churches of the poison of anti-Semitism," Greenberg said. "Support of this declaration by church leaders would help build a more positive interfaith dialogue between Orthodox Christians and Jews, and help increase religious respect around the world."

Bishop Paul Peter Jesep, U.S. Director of Public Affairs for the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church Diaspora, said he supports the priests' campaign as essential to the future of the Orthodox Church.

"The Church has not done enough to address anti-Semitism," Jesep said, speaking in his individual capacity. "The Liturgy must be modified so that it is brought closer to the teachings of Christ."

The ten-page declaration endorses the eternal connection between the Jewish people and the land of Israel, and calls for the repudiation of replacement theology, which erroneously contends that God's covenant with the Jewish people is not eternal. "It is time that we called anti-Semitism a grave sin against God and man," the declaration said.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.

Saturday, 09.07.2007, some 1.000 nationalists marched on the streets of Bucharest, the capital city of Romania, at the call of Noua Dreapta (The New Right). The "March for Normality" was organized in response to the gay parade that took place later that day in Bucharest and in support to the traditional values of the Romanian nation. Viewers on the sidewalks and at the building windows showed their support to the messages and speeches of the romanian nationalists against homosexuality propaganda, homosexual marriage rights and children adoptions, cheering and acclaiming them. No major incidents were reported, only that some 20 left wing extremists tryed to provoke the members of Noua Dreapta, but they were immediately arrested by the police.

The gay march attracted only 300 people. The marchers were under the protection of at least 700 riot police officers. The later incidents during the gay parade were started by common people and viewers. Police fired tear gas to hold the anti-gay protesters at bay after hundreds threw stones and attempted to break through protective cordons manned by the 700 officers. Dozens were detained and later released.

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greek police shut down an Athens art exhibit and arrested the show's curator for what they said was "indecent" art, prompting heated protests from Greece's press and art world on Monday.

Police stormed the Art Athina show on Saturday, shut down the video exhibit, which combined pornographic material with the Greek national anthem, and arrested curator Michalis Argyros who spent the night in jail.

"In the democratic Greece of 2007, it is unacceptable to limit expression and to prosecute creators," the daily Eleftherotupia said in its main editorial, echoing other papers. "It's not up to police to judge art."

Police officials said they acted on a tip-off that offensive material was shown at the art show, which is under the auspices of the Culture Ministry.

"We were told that there was something indecent that violated the law about offending national symbols and common decency," a police official said. "We went there with a public prosecutor who verified the offence and arrested the person in charge."

Argyros is expected to be charged by a prosecutor on Wednesday. The artist, Eva Stefani, is abroad and also wanted on charges of offending public decency. If convicted, they could face up to 10 months in jail, which is usually turned into a fine.

Culture Minister George Voulgarakis issued a statement saying he did not like the artwork in question but that artists were free to create.

"The specific artwork does not agree with my aesthetics or principles," he said. "Artists are free to create and citizens have a right to reject or not whatever they believe offends our national symbols."

The work -- showing scenes from 1960s Greek pornographic movies through a peephole to the sound of the Greek national anthem - was clearly marked with signs that it was not suitable for those under 18 years of age.

"I find it unacceptable that a work of art is violently removed from an exhibition," Stefani was quoted as saying to Eleftherotypia from Germany.

Greece presses charges over burning of Turkish flag

A prosecutor in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki has pressed charges against unidentified persons who burned a Turkish flag during a Greek-Armenian demonstration in front of Turkey's consulate in the city last month.

The perpetrators are to be brought to justice under the charge of insulting the symbol of another state after they are identified via photographs and video shot during the demonstration, a local justice source said on Wednesday. After this was exposed, the spokesman from the company was shocked that people were opposed at this "normal" practice. In his words:

These demented attitudes are no surprise when one considers that China forces women to have abortions against their will and performs unethical, barbaric experiments such as ones that involve putting animal DNA into human embryos and then killing the genetically-altered human being. Greece and other Orthodox Christian nations should break off trade with China given that they murder innocent human beings and then sell us products containing human parts.

This article also implicates capitalism and big business in promoting abortion and experimentation on the unborn (as well as infants in this case). Given the very clear role capitalism plays, one would think that leftists would eventually arrive at a pro-life position and yet they still support these atrocities. But leftists, despite their insecure declarations of being "revolutionaries", have always been reactionaries and this mentality accounts for such positions. Why does the left support abortion? Because they perceive the political right as being opposed to it. There is leftist "wisdom" for you: instead of analyzing the issue to arrive at the correct conclusion and reach an ethical position on the matter (i.e., that abortion is a clear violation of human rights and cannot be justified on any grounds), the left is satisfied with knee-jerk reactionism as the basis of its ideology and, therefore, prefers to do the opposite of whatever the right does. And this goes for most of their ideological positions. Although this is the left's excuse for supporting the greatest human rights violation and crime against humanity, what is the "excuse" of Orthodox Christians who abort their children?

INFANTS LIKELY KILLED TO HARVEST STEM CELLS

In the Ukraine, investigators are exploring the possibility that healthy infants and preborns were killed for stem-cell experimentation. It is speculated that the babies' organs were
extracted after allegedly being stolen from mothers by staff at Maternity Hospital Number Six in the eastern city of Kharkov.

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) claims to have a video showing the autopsy examination of 30 infants and fetuses that were exhumed from a cemetery used by the Ukrainian maternity hospital. The video was also turned over to the Council of Europe who is now carrying out its own investigation as a response to about 300 families who are coming forward with charges against the hospital for allegedly taking and killing their newborns.

Pictures from the autopsies reveal tiny dismembered bodies with missing organs and brains. Since dismemberment of bodies is not a standard post-mortem practice, it is likely the babies were harvested for the high amounts of stem cells in their brains and bone marrow.

It is a recognized practice in the Ukraine, the stem-cell capital of the world, to take stem cells from aborted fetuses with the mothers' consent. Due to the increasing worldwide demand for stem cells, it is possible healthy newborns are now being used to feed this demand. These healthy babies mysteriously "die" following a successful birth.

Such is likely the case for Ukrainian couple Dimitry and Olena Stulnev who had their baby at Maternity Hospital Number Six.

"I gave birth to a healthy girl," Olena said. "She was crying and moving her hands and legs. I was shown the baby. After that the girl was taken away. They told me everything was OK, and I could see her the next day."

Olena never saw her baby again. She was told the next day that her baby was dead and given conflicting stories as to the reason for the child's death. The couple began investigating the death of their child but got nowhere. The more they pried, the less information they got.

Even today, Ukrainian authorities and hospital staff remain tight-lipped about the suspected use of newborns for stem-cell research.

According to investigative reporter Matthew Hill, "The Ukrainian authorities deny any conspiracy and refute claims that there is a trade in stem cells taken from stolen babies."

"No work in this hospital is connected with the use of cells," Dr. Larysa Nazarenko told Hill. Nazarenko is the chief doctor at Maternity Hospital Number Six.

Although speculations are being disputed by those accused of committing these atrocities, Hill thinks the silence will be broken in February when the Council of Europe returns to Kharkov to continue its investigation of what has already become a horrifying insight into the stem-cell controversy.

"One of the things that we have been concerned about for years is the fact that, by pushing embryonic stem-cell research, we're looking at a situation that is bound to use human beings as fodder for the experiments," said Dr. Janice Crouse, director of the Beverly LaHaye Institute at Concerned Women for America (CWA).

Bioethicist Wesley Smith believes the demand for hundreds of millions of eggs and stem cells will lead to fetal farming.

"In order to get the millions and millions of eggs that would be required, poor women in Bangladesh, in Congo, in other destitute nations would be seen by biotechnologists as so many egg farms ripe for the harvest," Smith explained. "This commoditization of human life
is pernicious. …"

Sadly, it appears to be motivated by big business and financial gain.

For example, the allegations of the stolen Ukrainian babies come only months after Family News in Focus reported women in the Ukraine were being paid $200 to abort their babies for the acquisition of stem cells. More specifically, according to Smith, the women were paid to
get pregnant for the sole purpose of aborting the babies at eight weeks gestation so the stem cells could be used for an anti-aging beauty treatment.

The Institute for Regenerative Medicine (IRM) in Barbados uses such a treatment that supposedly improves one's fitness, sex life, mental capacity and sleeping patterns. IRM buys its stem cells used in the treatment from the Ukraine.

The treatment involves injecting clients with stem cells from seven- to ten-week-old aborted babies. But now there is reason to question a possible link between this or other treatments and the missing Ukrainian babies.

Whether the stem cells are taken from aborted or birthed babies, "Destroying innocent life to meet a business demand for stem cells is an unconscionable bioethical breach," said Wendy Wright, CWA president.

"The entire concept of the human being as a product is coming into vogue," Smith added, "and it should be a great concern to everyone."

I would like to speak to you today about the problem of conservative New-Calendarism. By conservative New Calendarists I mean those who consider the institution of the Gregorian calendar and involvement in the ecumenical movement to be misguided, unfortunate, or even to some degree heretical, but nevertheless remain in churches which follow the New Calendar and foster Ecumenism.

While conservative New Calendarists rightly consider Orthodoxy to be the one and only true Church of Christ and adhere to Orthodox doctrines and practices with admirable zeal, they find themselves under bishops who deny those doctrines and shun traditional piety. Although this situation is certainly uncomfortable for them, they are obligated to justify it, and to this end employ the following argument: 'the participation of our bishops in the ecumenical movement is wrong, but it is only an abuse, not a heresy; and if it even descends to the level of heresy, it occurs only on a personal, not an official level. Thus the church as a whole is not implicated in the heresy, and one may in good conscience continue in communion with the bishops in question.' This line of reasoning underlies virtually all serious attempts to justify remaining in the New-Calendarist, or Ecumenist church, and not returning to the Old-Calendarist, or traditional Orthodox Church.

The argument in itself begs the question of what constitutes an official act; yet actually, the distinction between a heresy official and one unofficial was never made by the Fathers. Church history bears witness that when a bishop proclaimed a heresy while preaching in church, his hearers would immediately break communion with him, while the other bishops of the Church would sever communion as soon as they had ascertained whether he truly did hold such opinions, and had given him an opportunity to recant. This was precisely the case with Nestorios, for example. Nonetheless, I will take up the challenge, and demonstrate that the New Calendar church has unquestionably espoused heretical teachings in the most official capacity possible: that of public proclamation by a Patriarch, and approval of the proclamation by the Synod of the Church.

In 1948 the World Council of Churches was created, a worldwide organization whose sole purpose for existing is to promote Ecumenism and the non-Orthodox ecclesiological principles upon which ecumenism is based. The Patriarchate of Constantinople and a number of other Orthodox Churches were founding members, and thus showed that they wholeheartedly espouse the Council's goals and beliefs: indeed, they helped formulate those goals and beliefs. The charter of the Council states:

â€œThe primary purpose of the fellowship of churches in the World Council of Churches is to call one another to visible unity in one faith and one eucharistic fellowship¦ In seeking koinonia in faith and life, witness and service, the churches through the council will: "Promote the prayerful search for forgiveness and reconciliation in a spirit of mutual accountability, the development of deeper relationships through theological dialogue, and the sharing of human, spiritual, and material resources with one another; "Facilitate common witness in each place and in all places, and support each other in their work for mission and evangelism; "Nurture the growth of an ecumenical consciousness through processes of education and a vision of life in community rooted in each particular cultural context; "Assist one another in their relationships to and with people of other faith communities; "Foster renewal and growth in unity, worship, mission and service. "In order to foster the one ecumenical movement, the Council will: "Nurture relations with and among churches, especially within, but also beyond its membership; "Establish and maintain relations with national councils, regional conferences of churches, organizations of Christian World Communions, and other ecumenical bodies; "Support ecumenical initiatives at regional, national, and local levels; "Facilitate the creation of networks among ecumenical organizations; "Work towards maintaining the coherence of the one ecumenical movement in its diverse manifestations.

These principles are totally unacceptable for a person with an Orthodox understanding of the Church. They illustrate that the heresy the Orthodox are confronting is not simply union with this or that heretical church (which has not yet happened except in the case of the monophysites). Rather, the heresy is the idea that heretical groups outside the Church are indeed somehow part of the Church, and that the Orthodox Church is part of a larger whole comprised of both the Orthodox and the heterodox. Now, any statement which gives any ecclesial standing whatsoever to a body outside the Church is a heretical statement, because the Orthodox Church is the entirety of the Church. The other so-called churches are not churches at all, but false assemblies set up in opposition to the one, true Church. They are anti-churches. The charter and mission - even the very name - of the World Council of Churches cuts at the root of Orthodox doctrine by placing all "churches" on the same ontological level. Moreover, the World Council of Churches expressly recognizes only one ecumenical movement; that is, its own. It does not leave any room for a valid â€œ Orthodox Ecumenism which would seek to convert the heterodox. No one can claim that the purpose of Orthodox involvement in ecumenism is to witness to Orthodoxy, since the only side of "Orthodoxy" being presented is precisely whatever can be brought into seeming conformity with the principles set out in the World Council of Churchesâ€™ charter, a document which, as we have seen, denies the Orthodox teaching on the Church. Ecumenism is the exact opposite of evangelization.

Any church which joins the World Council of Churches thereby embraces the ecclesiological concepts upon which the Council is founded. These concepts become part of the beliefs of the individual church in question. The Patriarchate of Constantinople and the other New-Calendarist Churches not only accepted these principles and helped formulate them, but have proven their continued adherence to them in a variety of ways over the past sixty years. Thus, there can be no doubt that the official doctrine of the New-Calendarist churches is one of heretical ecumenism, regardless of the fact that many of the New-Calendarist faithful personally disagree with their church's position.

Once the New Calendar churches had espoused the principles of ecumenism, they were not slow to act upon them in concrete ways. One of the very first major steps which put into practice the ecclesiological teaching of ecumenism was the lifting of the anathemas of 1054 against the Roman Catholic Church. Patriarch Athenagoras and the Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople took this action December, 1965. In a joint statement with Pope Paul VI, they declared that, â€œThey regret the offensive words, the reproaches without foundation, and the reprehensible gestures which on both sides have marked or accompanied the sad events of this period.

"They likewise regret and remove both from memory and from the midst of the Church the sentences of excommunication which followed these events, the memory of which has influenced actions up to our day and has hindered closer relations in charity; and they commit these excommunications to oblivionâ€¦ "Through the action of the Holy Spirit those differences will be overcome through regret for historical wrongs and through an efficacious determination to arrive at a common understanding and expression of the faith of the Apostles and its demands.

The meaning of this official document is clear: the Orthodox condemnation of Latin heresies is "without foundation" and must be obliterated from memory;and we do not yet understand the faith of the Apostles.

In September, 1990, official delegates from all the New Calendarist churches met in Chambesy, Switzerland with official representatives of the monophysite churches. They restated those points of Christology on which the Orthodox and monophysites have always agreed, they ignored or dismissed as semantical misunderstandings those points on which they disagree, and then they declared, â€œIn the light of our agreed statement on Christology as well as of the above common affirmations, we have now clearly understood that both families have always loyally maintained the same authentic Orthodox Christological faith, and the unbroken continuity of the apostolic tradition, though they have used Christological terms in different ways. It is this common faith and continuous loyalty to the Apostolic Tradition that should be the basis for our unity and communion.

"Both families agree that all the anathemas and condemnations of the past which now divide us should be lifted by the Churches in order that the last obstacle to the full unity and communion of our two families can be removed by the grace and power of God. Both families agree that the lifting of anathemas and condemnations will be consummated on the basis that the Councils and Fathers previously anathematized or condemned are not heretical."

The Chambesy agreement is an open espousal of the ancient heresy of monophysitism. Its acceptance by the Orthodox has been made possible by the modern heresy of ecumenism, which allows two mutually exclusive doctrines to co-exist, while pretending that the truth is either the mean between the two, or the lowest common denominator of the two, or something to be discovered in the future, or simply irrelevant if we all profess love for one another.

Some conservative New-Calendarists pretend that the Chambesy agreement is not an official declaration of faith, but rather a series of recommendations by individual theologians, which the Churches are free to accept or reject. The superficiality of this notion, however, is contradicted by the so-called "Pastoral Agreement between the Coptic Orthodox and Greek Orthodox Patriarchates of Alexandria," which was signed in 2001. This document announces:

The Holy Synods of both the Coptic Orthodox Church and the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and all Africa have already accepted the outcome of the official dialogue on Christology between the Orthodox Church and the Oriental Orthodox Churches, including the two official agreements: the first on Christology signed in June 1989 in Egypt and the second also on Christology and on the lifting of anathemas and restoration of full communion signed in Geneva 1990 [that is, in Chambesy,] in which it is stated that â€˜in the light of our agreed statement on Christology¦, we have now clearly understood that both families have always loyally maintained the same authentic Orthodox Christological faith, and the unbroken continuity of Apostolic tradition.â€™ It was agreed to have mutual recognition of the sacrament of Baptism, based on what St. Paul wrote, One Lord, one faith, one baptism (Eph. 4:5.)

The document further states: â€œThe Holy Synods of both Patriarchates have agreed to accept the sacrament of marriage when it is conducted for two partners not belonging to the same Patriarchate¦ Each of the two Patriarchates shall also accept to perform all of its other sacraments to that new family of mixed Christian marriage."

This declaration shows clearly that the Patriarchate of Alexandria regards the Chambesy agreement as an official statement of doctrine, and not simply the private judgment of individuals. Moreover, the Patriarchate has officially recognized the monophysites as constituting a Church as valid and legitimate as the Orthodox Church; indeed, it states that the Orthodox are of "one faith" with the monophysites.

Even more troubling is the decision of the â€œHoly Synod of Antiochâ€ under Patriarch Ignatius IV, which was made in June 1991. With respect to it relations with the Syrian monophysites, the Antiochian Church announced that the following measures would be observed:

â€œThe complete and mutual respect between the two churches for their rituals, spirituality, heritage and holy fathers. "The incorporation of the fathers of both churches and their heritage in general in the Christian education curriculum and theological teaching. "The refraining of accepting members of one church in the membership of the other whatever the reasons might be. "Organizing meetings of both Synods whenever need and necessity might arise."If two bishops of the two different churches meet for a spiritual service the one with the majority of people will preside. "If one priest of either church happens to be in a certain area he will serve the divine mysteries for the members of both churches, including the divine liturgy and the sacrament of holy matrimony. "If two priests of both churches happen to be in a certain community they will take turns, and in case they concelebrate, the one with the majority of people will preside. "If a bishop of one church and a priest from the sister church happen to concelebrate presiding naturally belongs to the bishop."

In other words, the Patriarchate of Antioch has entirely abandoned the Orthodox Church and is in full communion with the monophysites. The Patriarchate has decided that the ecumenical councils â€“ which embody the Church's definitive expressions of belief “ are optional, and that it is not necessary to adhere to them to be part of the Orthodox Church. Thus, we see the heresy of ecumenism operating on two levels. On the one hand, the New-Calendar churches accept the basic idea that other Christian bodies are part of the Church, and that the Church is not exclusively synonymous with Orthodoxy. This is ecumenism in theory. On the other hand, they recognize that specific heretical bodies, such as the Roman Catholic church and the monophysite churches, are in fact Orthodox in doctrine; and they have even entered into communion with the monophysites. This is ecumenism in practice.

Both of these forms of ecumenism are operating in the New-Calendar churches on the most official level possible. They have been publicly proclaimed by a Patriarch and ratified by the Holy Synod. It is not possible for them to be any more official then they already are. Moreover, these official actions must not be considered in isolation, but in the context of ecumenism's overall effect on the Church. Innumerable hierarchs have made blasphemous statements denying virtually every dogma of Orthodoxy, joint prayers are conducted with heretics on a regular basis, communion is freely given to Roman Catholics and other heterodox, and agreements such as the so-called Balamand union and the recent appalling statement of the 9th Assembly of the World Council of Churches are concluded by official delegates from the New-Calendarist Churches.

These statements affirm the Branch Theory and a host of other errors. The heresy of ecumenism has infected not one of the local Orthodox Churches, but all of them. Each of the Patriarchates has contributed in its own way to perverting the Orthodox faith: Constantinople by lifting the anthemas which the holy Fathers laid on the Roman Catholic Church, Alexandria by accepting the monophysites as Orthodox, Antioch by partaking of the same chalice as the monophysites, and all the ecumenist churches collectively by participating in the World Council of Churches and abolishing the Patristic understanding of the Church. All of the ecumenist churches are in full communion with one another and share the same ecumenist faith: the beliefs of one are the beliefs of all, and each of the Patriarchates supports and encourages the ecumenical gestures of the others. Our primary question at this point should be, what are the faithful to do when their bishops are in heresy? The patristic answer is clear: break communion immediately, because those bishops no longer represent the Church, but a foreign body. It is impossible for Orthodox Christians to hold communion with heretical bishops, inasmuch as a common Eucharistic cup denotes a common faith. St. Cyril of Alexandria states that "the Body of Christ binds us into unity" and "there is no division of belief among the faithful." And the Apostle Paul asks, What communion hath light with darkness? Or what concord hath Christ with Belial? When the monothelete bishop Theodosios asked St. Maximos the Confessor why he had cut himself off from communion with see of Constantinople, the saint replied, â€œIn the sixth indiction of the last cycle, Cyrus, Patriarch of Alexandria, published the Nine Chapters [stating that Christ had but a single energy,] which were approved by the see of Constantinople. Soon the novelties proposed in that document were followed by others, overturning the definitions of holy councils. These innovations were devised by primates of the Church of Constantinople: Sergios, Pyrrhus, and Paul, as all the other Churches know very well. This is the reason I, your servant, am not in communion with the throne of Constantinople. Let the offenses introduced by those men be rejected and the abettors deposed; then the way to salvation will be cleared, and you will walk the smooth path of the Gospel unhindered by heresy. When I see the Church of Constantinople walking as she was formerly, I shall enter into communion with her uncompelled, but as long as the scandal of heresy persists in her and her bishops are miscreants, no argument or persecution will win me over to your side." On another occasion the Eparch of Constantinople asked St. Maximos, "Will you enter into communion with our Church, or not? will not," said the saint. "Why?" asked the Eparch. "Because it has rejected the rulings of Orthodox councils," said Maximos. The Eparch continued, â€œIf that be so, how is it that the fathers of those councils remain in the diptychs of our Church? "How do you profit by commemorating them, when you renounce their doctrines?" countered the saint.

Examples such as these could be multiplied almost indefinitely. Suffice to say that the most basic criterion of Orthodox ecclesiology is to refrain from communion with heretical bishops. This applies even before such bishops are condemned by an ecumenical council, as we see from the case of St. Maximos, who broke communion decades before the condemnation of monoenergism and monothelitism by the 6th Ecumenical Council. The sound application of these principles to the present-day situation should be obvious. Anyone who considers himself to be an Orthodox Christian should sever communion with any bishop who preaches, participates in, or furthers ecumenism directly or indirectly; and he should join himself to those Orthodox Christians who already have ceased ecclesiastical contact with such bishops.

Those Christians are precisely the Old Calendarists, or True Orthodox Christians, who rejected the heresy of ecumenism the moment it appeared, and in no way allowed themselves to be defiled by communion with bishops who alter the faith of the Apostles. When the conservative New-Calendarists take this same step, they will be following the path of the Holy Fathers; they will have separated themselves from the heretics, and joined themselves to the assembly of the Orthodox.

Greek Lobbying On Greek Genocide

Last night we attended one of the few events in the New York City area related to the Pontic Greek Genocide , although May 19th is the official Day of Remembrance nothing at all was done in New York City on that day nor in Athens for that matter, the only action that went on anywhere in the world from reports was a small memorial service that was held in the heavily Pontic Greek populated city of Thessaloniki on May 19th . We , Hellenic Nationalists in New York city,, waited until May 22nd to attend part of an organised North American speaking tour of University of Thrace academic ,Dr. Fanis Malkidis , in Greek ΦΑΝΗΣ ΜΑΛΚΙΔΗΣ , at the request of Pontian diaspora groups, all coordinated by the respective educational attaches of the Greek Foreign Ministry.

The event in the Archdiocese Cathedral was attended by 45 ppl, the vast majority of attendees were well in their fifties in age and beyond , and it seems that the event was advertised almost exclusively to regional Diaspora groups, the Pontian diaspora group leader, of Pontian Society "PONTOS" of Norwalk, Connecticut was in attendance as were many members of the The Pan- Pontian Federation of USA- CANADA who from what I gathered, learned about this event from word of mouth and emails. The major Hellenic American newspaper "National Herald" did NOT advertise this event, we learned of this event totally by chance while stumbling onto the PontosWorld.com which advertised the events this month surrounding the the May19th Pontic Greek Genocide Remembrance Day. To our dismay, there was not one piece of paper, no flyer, no sign-in-sheet, nothing from the Pontian groups organising this event,at the event, as to how we can get in touch with them, how we can meet speakers and so on, we even asked the old guy,sorry, the president of PONTIAN SOCIETY "PONTOS" Of Norwalk, how we can get involved and all he had to say was "well you can go check the site, sometimes its updated...." His group is actually a sub-group of the larger aforementioned Pan-Pontian Federation and its site, has a link to a non-existant section on the Pontic Greek Genocide!

Vasileios Marinis , an adjunct Professor at Queens College in New York, has joined the Dr. Malkidis speaking tour this month in some North American cities, and he began his presentation of a slide show of the Aghia Sophia monastery, apparently the only standing Greek Orthodox Monastery building left standing in the entire Pontos region of whats now called "Turkey", the only thing we got out of his commentary on the slides was that it was built with porches and the few remaining details of the angels were amazing, it was apparent, though the presenter never pointed it out, that the face of Jesus was scraped off, as is usual with any icon visited by Muslim Turk invaders and occupiers. The interesting part to this presentation came from an audience member who immediately pointed out the obvious desecration..Vasileios Marinis immediately responded that "well we should make mention of preservation of monuments anywhere in the world (ed:what he meant to say was...not just in Turkey...) to be fair Aghia Sofia was part of joint British and....(he was afraid to say Turkish) restoration effort in the 1960s and was preserved...many monuments around the world are not preserved..." A follow up question ,IN GREEK, was asked by some old guy, in the audience who visited the region years ago, his parents were from there and he pointed out that the Aghia Sophia building was being used as a mosque until the 1960s and that all the walls were whitewashed of icons. THEN Marinis finally explained that yes, all the Greek Orthodox churches and monasteries in Pontos, were destroyed and since Aghia Sofia was centrally located in Trebizond ,or Trapezounta, it was made a mosque, as was common with the Islamic conquest of Asia Minor to destroy all Christian buildings and use the central structure in a city as a mosque...unfortunately, Mr Marinis ,apparently was afraid to say this in English, some woman sitting in front of me in a Bannana yellow jacket and mini-skirt and was part of the Greek Consulate entourage loudly shushed me when I provided a running translation into English of this exchange for a non-Greek speaker!

Finally it came the turn of Dr. Fanis Malkidis' presentation, done entirely in Greek, which centered on the theory that, get this, there are some 500,000 crypto-Christians living in Pontos and another 150,000 living in Constantinople, he based his presentation on the history of the Tanzimat reforms in 19th Century 'Turkey" when the government implemented a liberal policy towards minorities due to Western pressure, and he claimed that a considerable number of crypto-Christians re-converted back to Christianity from Islam. All along reading poems and letters from crypto-Christians from this era, he then jumped to the conclusion that this coincides with current efforts by the EU to pressure the government in Ankara to accept liberal European policies. And inferred that this would lead to crypto-Christians coming out of the closet . Neglecting to mention that these people who may speak Pontic Greek dialects have been Muslim for three or four generations and have been intermarrying and mixing ,racially and otherwise, with Turks and Kurds and Lazs and Circassions and God knows what other various mixed breeds in Islamified Pontos and Constantinople for generations .Lets not forget that unlike the 19th Century Pontos, modern post-Genocide Pontos has NOT ONE operating Greek Orthodox church. Tellingly the two sites he referenced karalahana.com and ocena.info are Turkish sites, one is even promoted by Greek political establishment daily , kathimerini.

The concluding remarks had to do with the failure of previous Greek administrations in past decades to reach out to Pontic Greek speakers in Asia Minor and their negligence in accepting immigrants from "Turkey", but remarked that the current government is committed to building a Greek consulate in Trebizond in order to better facilitate requests for immigration into Greece, thus without him saying so, one reaches the conclusion that this theory is very convenient to explaining away the waves of , hundreds of thousands of Turkish immigrants that the degenrate-Greek political Establishment is ,apparently, planning to bring to Greece, making the duped, smiling , Greek-on-the-street believe that these are our "brothers" and also using this theory of Greek speaking crypto-Christians or "Greek Muslims" to facilitate more and more support for the political establishment's Greek-Turkish friendship propaganda and official state policy, ultimately resulting in more loot for the capitalist profiteers in the form of cheap immigrant labor and open markets concurrent with their plan for the eventual total destruction of the Greek nation, which the political establishment and the Greek capitalist abhors.

It's really a shame that these old guys who run the Pontian groups,who while they may have their hearts in the right place, they don't realise how they, with no experience whatsoever in real activism and lobbying, and with their blind faith in the Greek Foreign Ministry of the political establishment, are harming their own people. Moreover, its becomes also apparent that the Greek genocide denial of the Greek political establishment has entered a second phase, now that they realise that its too late , due to grassroots educational efforts, to openly deny the Greek genocide, the establishment instead is now promoting this crackpot crypto-Christian theory in order to dupe us , the Greek people, into welcoming the Turks into our homes as "brothers"

Albanians Living In Shame

We've noticed in the diaspora that Albanians hide behind an ethnic cover that is not their own, usually they claim to be an "Italian" , we got to "out" a crypto-Albanian busing tables at a Greek restaurant who attempted to pose as "Greek" to hapless diners, because he spoke a few phrases in his horrid Albo accent, out of the corner of our eye we caught him exchanging Muslim salutations with an Arab street vendor, shifty. So try it out , if you or someone you know owns or operates a business and has a pet Albo, install a webs cam and see if he misrepresents himself to the ignorant Americans.

Deep down Albanians are ashamed because they know they are bad, and know that their pseudo-identity and pseudo-nation is merely a creation of the Western "powers".

We attended vespers at Saint Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Brooklyn, New York tonight , officiated by Archbishop Demetrios, who flew into town after a Sunday service at Saint Constantine and Helen in Washington DC, and tomorrow morning H.E. Demetrios will be officiating over Divine Liturgy at Saint Constantine and Helen in the New York suburb of West Nyack, we were happy to hear the praise for our Saint Emperor described as genius, Archbishop Demetrios said that "if you ever stay in a high rise in Constantinople when you visit and look at over that big city, you must realise it was nothing before Constantine conceived it and planned it as the capital of the Christian empire." Greek police guard Mount Athos

SALONIKA, Greece - Greek police have been stationed around the monastic community of Mount Athos, one of Orthodox Christianity’s holiest sites, a day after some 200 pilgrims attempted to enter the enclave illegally, local officials said.

Police in the main outlying city of Salonika said the pilgrims wanted to access Esphigmenou Monastery, which is occupied by a dissident monk faction at odds with the other 20 monasteries of the semi-autonomous community, but lacked permits from the community collegium and were repulsed.

Around 30 pilgrims managed to evade police on Wednesday by jumping over a wall.

The pilgrims went to Mount Athos, some 120 kilometres southeast of Salonika in northern Greece, for the religious festival of the Assumption.

Esphigmenou Monastery has been under occupation by around 80 elderly monks for years, despite an eviction order issued in 2002, and the overseers of Mount Athos are on the lookout for attempts to send supporters into the monastery.

The Esphigmenou monks observe the old Julian Calendar and oppose the Patriarchate’s 1972 decision to improve ties with the Roman Catholic Church.

In October, nine of the Esphigmenou monks were condemned to two-year suspended prison sentences for refusing to leave the monastery.

Two months later, a clash between the dissident group and members of a rival monastic order appointed to replace them left four monks hospitalised.

Dear Prime Minister,

I am a Turkish filmmaker living in Ireland. It has come to my attention that the Bilderberg Group are holding their next meeting in Istanbul this year, between May 31 and June 3rd.(1) I have known about this group since 1993 and have been following their activities over the past 14 years. According to many sources, since its inception in 1954 by former Nazi S.S. Officer Prince Bernhard of The Netherlands, the Bilderberg Group have been covertly continuing the Nazi policy of creating a New World Order (a global totalitarian dictatorship). (2)
Likely to attend this year's meeting are Paul Wolfowitz, Dr. Henry Kissinger and Donald Rumsfeld:

As U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense, Paul Wolfowitz was one of the major architects of the Iraqi War (3) and is still a member of PNAC (Project for a New American Century). PNAC is a neo-conservative think-tank which called for a "catalyzing event" for their policies "like a New Pearl Harbour" exactly a year before 9/11.(4) Mr. Wolfowitz is currently being questioned on charges of corruption and has been asked to resign as head of the World Bank. As member of the Steering Committee of the Bilderberg Group, Dr. Henry Kissinger is also likely to attend. According to many sources, Dr. Kissinger is a mass murderer who implemented and defended the decision to run 600 illegal bombing missions in Cambodia ("Operation Menu"), causing the deaths of over 500,000 Cambodians between 1969 and 1973. Under the U.S. constitution, this secret bombing campaign was illegal without U.S. Congressional approval. (5) Two months after striking a peace accord with North Vietnam in October 1972, he authorised 129 B-52 bombers to bomb North Vietnam for 11 days in a "demonstration bombing" as a public relations exercise to appease South Vietnam (called "The Christmas Bombing").

Former U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia David Newsom, and a Senior CIA Officer both confirm that on December 5th 1975, Dr. Kissinger, along with President Ford, held a meeting in Indonesia with President Suharto. Transcripts of this meeting prove that he gave the greenlight to the subsequent Indonesian Invasion of East Timor. This lead to the massacre of over 100,000 Timoreans and violated the U.S. law on arms trade. (6) Recently, a French judge subpoened Dr. Kissinger about U.S. involvement with mass-killings in Chile, Operation Condor and General Augusto Pinochet. He still hasn't attended the hearing and has been evading the subpoena ever since.(7) Bilderberg member Donald Rumsfeld is also another PNAC member and was the main architect of the Iraqi War. As he is a regular Bilderberg attendee, there is a possibility that he may attend this year's meeting in Istanbul.(8)

My main concerns and therefore my questions to you are:
(a) Why are war-mongers the likes of Paul Wolfowitz, Henry Kissinger and Donald Rumsfeld being allowed to hold a secret meeting in Turkey this year, without the Turkish people's knowledge or approval?
(b) Why are the Turkish newspapers not discussing this event which will be taking place in Istanbul?
(c) It is obvious that a secret meeting of elite minds and warmongers like these is likely to result in the manufacture of another war for profit. I would therefore like to know whether they will be holding this meeting to plan the next stages of an upcoming war with Iran? Will they be using Turkey as a chess-piece in this next war? Also, as Dr. Kissinger wrote the book "Nuclear Weapons and Foreign Policy" and admits that he is not averse to using nuclear weapons in a war situation, will they be involving us in a nuclear one?

One journalist who has been invited to this year's meeting is Mr. Cengiz Çandar. However, in my opinion, he will be providing a complete whitewash on this year's event. Being a former lecturer at the Istanbul Bilgi (American) University (9), and a good friend of Paul Wolfowitz during the 2003 Invasion of Iraq, it is obvious in my opinion that Mr. Çandar has been invited to attend the conferences due to his loyalty to Bilderberg, and will most definitely be writing pro-Bilderberg articles. (10) Therefore, it is my belief not to trust him to make an accurate appraisal of this year's meeting and I ask that independent Turkish journalists attend this year, so that the Turkish people know exactly what is taking place in their own country.

I am completely appalled by the total lack of discussion in Turkish newspapers about the upcoming Bilderberg meeting, by the huge level of secrecy and denial surrounding it, the total lack of transparency of these meetings, and by the high level of ignorance Turkish people are showing about the Bilderberg Group. A secret meeting is being held by the world's most influential warmongers, right under our noses! This is an outrage.

As a Turkish citizen, I am deeply offended that my own government would allow this secret meeting to take place on Turkish soil without our knowledge or approval. I therefore ask you that there be complete journalistic transparency at the upcoming Bilderberg meeting in Istanbul this year. If the Bilderberg Group have nothing to hide, then we must be allowed a full transcript of their meeting. Therefore, the Independent Turkish Press must attend the meeting this year. If this is not possible, I ask that you, as a servant of the Turkish people, not allow the upcoming Bilderberg meeting to take place in Turkey.

As a public servant, I expect your reply within 10 working days of receiving this Open Letter.

Two Jewish men, Sid and Al, were sitting in a Greek restaurant in New York.
Sid asked Al:
-Are there any people of our faith born and raised in Greece?
Al replied:
-I don't know, let's ask our waiter.
When the waiter came by, Al asked him:
-Are there any Greek Jews?
The waiter said:
-I'll ask the cooks.
He returned from the kitchen in a few minutes and said:
-No sir, no Greek Jews.
Al wasn't really satisfied with that and asked:
-Are you absolutely sure?
The waiter, realizing he was dealing with 'xenoi' [foreigners] gave the
